Where would we be without CHOICE and their valuable consumer products and services reviews? At last month's CHOICE Shonky Awards, products and companies were awarded with this 'prestigious' honour for being shameless, dodgy and just plain ridiculous. The actual 'award ceremony' was peppered with wry wit and humour but of course there was a serious undertone to this. Yes I realise, there is a delay in this post but I plead innocence as I was at the mercy of blog gremlins then, as luck would have it, I lost my photos! May I award my own Shonky to my cheapo External HDD?
With some of the photos of the event recovered (thank you Mr IT Master!), here's one thing that I definitely don't want underneath my tree...
A food processor that the cheese broke. Genius.
This Tiffany FP807 Food Processor was undoubtedly cheap but for a good reason. It doesn't cut cheese. Yep even a humble soft block of cheese proved too big of an opponent for this so-called food processor but shockingly, it didn't seem to have a problem with losing a few of its plastic components in the process. Avoid putting this under your Christmas tree (and mine) for fear of plastic shards embedded in your recipient's forehead.
However if you must... I would love to take one of these shonky babies and throw in a whole packet of Arnotts Ginger Nuts (more bricks than cookies, they are) and watch the ensuing debris and mayhem. Can you tell that I'm easily amused?
The (dis)honourable class of 2009
Other Shonky winners include:
- L'oréal Elvive - you just know that a shampoo is kickass when they use a lot of big, smart words and amazing mystical ingredients such as Nutrileum. See? Loreal is so good, that they're adding in the good stuff that we haven't even discovered yet.
- Reegen Micro-plug - claims to save you on household energy and of course, it doesn't.
- Chef’s Cupboard and Massel liquid chicken stock – literally a box of chicken(less) stock powder with added water.
- Uncle Toby’s Honey Oat Crisp – for sneakily reducing their size without reducing the price.
- Credit Protection Insurance - wow... a shonky insurance company? Can you tell how shocked I am?
- QANTAS and Tiger Airways (runners-up) - for the audacity of charging you a $7.70 credit card fee on top of your airfare and a whopping $25 for international fares. Thank you Qantas for reaffirming exactly why I avoid you like a plague.
- Tel.Pacific Phone Cards - for ridiculous fees and charges.
